Artec - London
As part of its response to the issues of unemployment Islington Council set up in 1990 the Arts Technology Centre (Artec) using funding from the European Regional Development Fund and the European Social Fund. The Artec runs a national and internationally recognised course to train local unemployed people from marginalised groups in the new skills required by the multimedia industry and by the new activities associated with the growth of the World Wide Web. It is also involved in numerous national and European collaborative projects in relation to the use of new technology in cultural production.
Periphera Actions:
- A multimedia development centre was added to the existing Artec training centre to assist ex-Artec trainees to move into employment, self employment and business start-up in the multimedia sector. The users are offered access to the latest telematic technologies based in the centre, as well as technical and administrative support and access to the Artec's wide range of existing commercial clients. Eventually the centre will become self-managing as a permanent support agency.
