Sint Michielsgestel
The Instituut voor Doven (IvD)based at Sint Michielsgestel is the largest organisation assisting deaf people in Holland and has 700 staff and around 2000 clients throughout the Netherlands. It is a publicly funded institution for the education, audiological care and social support for deaf children and adults. It's mission is the emancipation of deaf people in society. IvD provides services at a distance as well as a large campus, and it is actively involved in the development and piloting of video-telephony and multimedia telecommunication for deaf people.
At the Sint-Michielsgestel site, which is situated in a rural area, multimedia videoconferencing systems are used to develop and demonstrate a teleworking center for deaf people in order to improve their employment prospects and prevent and remedy the economic deprivation and social exclusion of deaf people. The users targeted in the Sint-Michielsgestel site are deaf adults who want to increase their employment prospects by gaining skills in teleworking.
Periphera Actions:
- A telecenter has been created, situated in the nearby village (external to IvD). The IvD department for Support for Deaf Adults is actively involved in the management of the telecenter, in partnership with a large employemnt agency. The partnership allows deaf trainees to gain employment through teleworking. The design of the telecent in Sint-Michielsgestel was realised in consultation with a large company involved in teleworking. The telecentre now seeks work for its trainees through existing telework organisations, and by teleworking for any commercail client approaching the centre. It is also intended that the training courses of the Sint-Michielsgestel telecentre will become integrated in the IvD program for education in administrative skills.
